“The L Word” has been my guilty pleasure television demonstrate for a numbers of years now. I honestly have no conception what originally brought me to the series, nor can I contemplate of any particular moment when it became appointment television, but eventually its hooks got sunk into me and I was lost. I notion it was a beautifully written, shot and acted series with plenty of drama (but never overtly over the time) and a very very talented cast.

Despite this, I was apprehensive with how downright bad the final season of the series is. The final season (which the writers were given an entire year to write and shot), is quiet of an 8-episode mystery of *SPOILER* Who Killed Jenny, with the first act of the season establishing the arc and the remained of the season played in flashbacks leading up to the astronomical moment. Yet, the writers never say who killed her, leaving the anecdote wide launch. That’s just, a 6 year series with a clear finale ended on a cliff-hanger, in a very anticlimatic episode, and honestly painful to explore episode.

Beyond that this season every character did something or revealed something ridiculously out of character that honest kept changing the entire dynamic of the series, and not in a beneficial scheme. After watching this on showtime, I’m pretending the series ended with season 5.

Ok…where do i originate? Well the 6th season of the l word i deem was a Sizable raze of time. Not only did they consume too great time on characters that weren’t going anywhere as far as storyline. And they didnt exercise enough time finishing up the tale lines with tall characters (ie. Bette and Tina.) which were probably the only characters in the ruin that you could catch seriously. I found myself wanting to hasty forward too many parts through out this season that were objective a kill of airtime. *spoiler* I dont hold anyone killed Jenny. If you watched the series from the beginning, its unprejudiced not in any of the girls to raze anyone. It would be sooo out of character.*

As far as the characters this season, they felt rushed, no depth anymore, no wedding,no really suited cameos, nothing.

Alice: Silly as usual, broad character.

Shane: Apparently she went insane this season and decided to date jenny and not occupy any of her friends.

Kit: No depth to her character anymore, objective a few “kittisms”.

Helena: WHY was she in this season! wasnt she a strong working woman at

the very beginning? they turned her into a character with no point.

Max: IC turned Max into a joke this season. No depth to the character. once again, rushed.

Bette: Collected the same strong character from season 1, she’s actually grown as a person and she shows it in season 6. gargantuan job with her.

Tina: More of a stronger person this season. Her scenes with Bette makes the whole season 6 more racy.

Tasha: umm what can i say. *Spoiler* the friend threesome thing was a very awful memoir line. IC trying to bring drama into places it shouldnt be. Why cant these characters honest be gratified?

Jenny: soooo Rushed. Season 6 made Jenny spy like she really went crazy. We all knew she was a cramped off. But she fair turned out to be a Snob, whiny, and sometimes acted like a 5 yr customary.

*spoiler* Nothing was answered in season 6. Every character was left in the dusky about something. And this display did not ruin with a bang like it should have. season 1-5 are spacious! but season 6 was fair a ruin of airtime and a lot of disapointment. I’ll take it to complete my collection but it definitely is NOT going to be opened or watched.

Fans of “Dr. Who” will feel apt at home in “Neverwhere,” with its astounding myth line, low-budget ogle and creaky acting. But “Who” haters will derive more of an adult appeal to Neil Gaiman’s darkly humorous epic, which also brings to mind “The Prisoner,” “Clockwork Orange” and, say, “Yellow Submarine.” “Neverwhere” wastes no time in hooking viewers, and maintains its loopy appeal over the course of six episodes.

“Neverwhere” imagines a grimy fantasy world beneath unusual London that’s unknown and off-limits to those who live above. The homeless who inhabit London Below seem to hail from an unspecified time several centuries abet, with their fill olde English mythologies, rivalries and rulers. Viewers enter their world along with the mini’s hero, a yuppie exec (Gary Bakewell of “Backbeat”) who falls down the “Neverwhere” rabbit hole while helping a damsel in injure.

Video is objective passable — the BBC apparently backed out on the belief to process the taped mini as film, foiling director Dewi Humphreys’ lighting intention. Tranquil, the images are a astronomical improvement over the grainy bootleg tapes that have been circulating on eBay. Audio is surprisingly effective now and then.

Gaiman has his say in a BBC interview from 1996 and in a commentary that runs the length of the miniseries. He tells how he got art-rock anecdote Brian Eno to do the catch for pennies and how he snuck in a cameo in graphic-novel artist Dave McKean’s fantastic opening titles.

After seven years, Neverwhere is finally available on DVD, and can be found on major shopping sites like Amazon. I’m positive many of you heard of it, but mighty fewer have seen it. This animated 1996 BBC mini-series was created by Mr. Neil Gaiman, accomplished and acclaimed author of American Gods, Coraline and Honorable Omens (with Terry Pratchett) among others, and co-written by Gaiman and the incredible British comedian Lenny Henry. Gaiman fans such as myself have waited for quite some time to stare this series introduced to American audiences - and since Gaiman is now finally breaking ground in the States (American Gods actually won the Hugo award, and was an international bestseller) this seems like the perfect time. I was lucky enough to find my hands on a video of the series a couple of years assist, but those are quite rare. If you appreciate Neil’s work, win the chance to finally leer this sparkling section of work.

Neverwhere is a highly imaginative chronicle of urban chronicle, rich with Gaiman’s special imprint of British murky humor. The script is really improbable, and Henry helps with his have experience in screenplay writing. Acting is terrific by everyone eager - I loved Gary Bakewell (frequent Paul McCartney impersonator on various BBC tele-biographies) as Richard Mayhew, the ordinary Englishman drawn into a curious adventure underground, and many other accomplished British actors - such as Laura Fraser, Trevor Peacock, Freddie Jones and Peter Capaldi - give a mountainous performance. Unfortunately, the series suffers from the same problems shared by most British TV series - a budget lower than that of one episode of `Dharma and Greg’. Therefore, the scenery, though highly inventive and new, doesn’t perceive very impressive. Dewi Humphreys directs like he would shriek a soap opera or a assassinate mystery, and though the directing of the dialogue is flawless, the action scenes are immensely disappointing, especially the `Beast of England’ battle, which is incredibly unconvincing.

Despite these weaknesses, though, the series is serene well worth watching, especially if you’re fond of the genre, and also if you’re fond of British television. A word on two expansive artists who contributed considerable to the series: Dave McKean, for one, the grand artist who collaborated with Gaiman in works like `The Tragical Comedy or Comic Tragedy of Mr. Punch’, `Black Orchid’ and Coraline, created an improbable opening sequence to every episode, which is a inviting share of work by itself; if you appreciate his work on such graphic novels as Arkham Asylum, Cages and his covers for Neil’s Sandman series, the DVD is worth it impartial for this one sequence. Secondly, the shimmering Mr. Brian Eno, the inventor of Ambient music and musical collaborator of the likes of David Byrne, David Bowie and Robert Fripp, supplies the astounding net to the series, very eerie and atmospheric synthesized music. Thank god for that, because without him we’d probably have basic British TV music, which tends to be quite unpleasant - and Eno’s sound really adds a lot to the atmosphere of the legend.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere! Click Here

It’s primary that, if you read and enjoyed the unusual Neverwhere, you won’t near this series expecting Hollywood - or even novel American television - production values, because you’ll be disappointed. A movie version of this nature, in collaboration with Jim Henson co, has been in talks for some time, but it doesn’t seem very likely. If fantasy films are to you special effects and great battle scenes, you probably won’t be impressed by Neverwhere. If you care for fantasy literature, though, and especially Gaiman’s work, you’ll gather Neverwhere highly rewarding. It’s very challenging, and very imaginative. And in the ruin, imagination is what fantasy is all about. Isn’t it?

This film is a classic. When I first saw it as a kid, I objective belief it was amusing, not realizing that it had a message as well as being laughable. I don’t know what my approved scene is, but there are some classics such as Rambro, and Sunless Acting School. Sustain an inaugurate mind when watching this film and try not to forget, in between laughs, that Townsend does have a serious theme about disrmination in Hollywood.

This has got to be the funniest movie I have ever watched, and the fact that Townsend set aside so distinguished into getting it made makes me indulge in it even more. While the film touches on a very considerable subject concerning the downfalls of being a dusky actor, it aloof manages to preserve the humor alive and strong. Highly recommend this film to all aspiring actors and all those who unprejudiced cherish a grand laugh.

If you’re looking for a movie that will give you an overall feel on what unhurried the curtain NCAA college football is all about, this ain’t the one. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many out there. While I did bag The Program somewhat spicy, I understanding that it tried to appeal to device too many *types* of viewers by convoluting any one distinct and relevant plotline with a host of subplots.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Program! Click Here

At the beginning of this movie, you may be led to possess that the movie is going to be a sort of exhibit on the business that college athletics has become. We open out by seeing the college’s well-planned attempt at trying to recruit a blue chip running-back (Omar Epps) . James Cann is grand as the 3-dimensional cool-headed coach, who understands that college football is broad money (I like contrasting this to the mean sum’va’bitch coach that Jon Voight plays in Varsity Blues) . This underscores the thought that education is a secondary wretchedness to many university officials.

There are some grand moments in the movie about NCAA corruption. Star linebackers seize alumni bribes in the movie. Issues of steroid addiction and grade fixing are touched upon, but never examined to stout capacity. Don’t fetch me noxious, normally, I like my sports movies with plenty of sports, but I don’t mediate that the salubrious station up was there for this to be called a solid 100% sports flick.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Program! Click Here

While the movie toys with the belief of being a sort of display, it never quite gets off the ground. I assume this is largely due to the fact that the makers of the film tried to rig it to appeal to too many different audiences.

For example, for the non-sports fans, there are 2 romantic subplots. One engaging the moping pariah star QB, Joe Cain, and his passion for the girl who doesn’t date jocks (touching…yawn) . And yet, another arresting Epp’s and Halle’s characters. For the sports diehards, there is the oh so very cliche expansive game with the classic dreary motion play that always works. For the sentimental crowd there is another subplot piquant Joe Kain’s tobacco-roadish alcoholic father who never goes to seek him play. There is, yet another subplot about Kain’s rehab from eposodic alcoholism.

Like I said, normally I like my sports movies with plenty sports, but this movie frames itself up to deal with the “gradual the scenes” issues and unprejudiced doesn’t arrive through. Yes, NCAA football is a dirty business. Shoot to ruin! Who gives a damn whether Omar Epps and Joe Kane obtain just romance?

By the map, the guy who played Lattimer deserved an Oscar for best supporting actor!

People have been essential of this film, but I’d like to talk about those of us who have played the game, been in the programs, and know that what this movie portrays is in many respects the truth nowdays in the business of college sports. The football action is some of the best that Hollywood has keep on the bigscreen. My friends and I care for this film, as it shows what we have lived. We sympothize with even the un-lovable charactors. Latimer does some abominable things in the movie but we know what pressure is like, the injury to the biggest bada$$ on the field hits cessation to home with any athlete, and keeping ones “edge” is convincing yourself that you are indestructable, invincible. The best football movie out there, detached. Whoever says this movie doesn’t hit home has never strapped it up and laid hat. Well worth the lift, need more on DVD!

I have waited and waited and waited and waited for this release on DVD. Marjoe won the Oscar in 1972 for best documentary and rightfully so. He went out on a limb, admitting he was a fraud and an entertainer, and brought a film crew to catch it all. I adore this film, the plan he shows traveling evangelists are mainly cons who form off with a lot of money from people who don’t have any to originate with. The segment with the preacher woman who breathes into her mic is crippling–telling her congregation she knows they have bills to pay and have place aside money for a winter coat but the church needs that money more. Ugh… It’s fabulous to observe him form and preach the word at these revivals–he’s very worthy a rock star–and even though he’s taking this money, it’s easy to sympathize with him. He was thrust into preaching at the age of four by parents who exploited and abused him to perform money for the family–and ultimately, the film itself is his confession and he’s genuinely sorry. I needed this movie when I saw it ten years ago. May it procure more viewers who are in a terrible diagram. Marjoe is the court jester of evangelists, and I thank him for doing this film and tarnishing his name on the Pentecostal circuit by doing so. He’s helped some of us decades after he took that leap.

I concur with all the other involved reviews of this documentary. What you need to know is that this film has been restored, literally transformed compared to the frail VHS version of this. The colors are lustrous, the report sure, the sound is crisp. What I like most about this movie is the design it messes with your mind, delightfully. Or as others have renowned, the truth clear is outlandish, and you’ve got an all access pass to this here travelin’ prove.

Well, for once I will not crop corners around this review, this film must be watched by everyone. It could quite possibly be the most well-done anime of all time.

Now, to commence off with the basics, “Metropolis” is a state-of-the-art anime that was based off of the aged Osamu Tezuka (”The God of Manga”, creator of “Astro Boy,” “Kimba,” and “Adolf” to name a few) silly from 1949. It’s unique update was written by Katsuhiro Otomo (”Robot Carnival,” and “Akira”) and directed by Rintaro (”X:The Movie,” and “Galaxy Utter 999″) . But you all know that after reading the shallow Amazon review from above.

The film’s tale has been brought up again and again, so I won’t go into it that worthy. However, I will say this, the anecdote is executed in a compose in which I would call “Noir Disney.” Don’t exertion, it’s nothing awful, it’s fair saying that although the film looks like it takes a childish advance to things, it tends to be a bit more on the sunless side. Thus, the film seems like a very keen blend of two different genres. Besides, Otomo takes obscene cautions with the script, incandescent that the material it’s based on is nearly half a century primitive.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Metropolis! Click Here

Characters are something to gleam over as well. Unlike “Akira,” “Ghost in the Shell,” or “Arcadia of my Youth” the characters have a fat belief of their emoitions. This can be credited not only to the favorable animation, but also to the very talented JAPANESE (not English) stammer cast. It is very easy to plunge in fancy with all of these characters. From the robot, Pero, to the detective Shunsaku Ban, even to the enigmatic Rock of the Marduk. A rarity even in Disney movies.

The animation is the sincere star of the point to. Blanding astonishing CGI and musty Tezuka-style characters, the artwork teems with both worthy and simple energy that radiates from ever cell of animation. Madhouse Studios (”Ninja Scroll,” “Trigun,” “Cardcaptor Sakura,” and several others) spent a LOT of time and anxiety on these breath-taking visuals. Whats more, they even place in enough peril to compose the film seem as if it were alive. For example, in one scene, Shunsaku Ban is reading a book, he flips the page, but the page flips attend (as it would in loyal life) and he turns the page abet to where it was. Don’t gape my point? Well, considering that animation is a technique that requires A LOT OF TIME AND Trouble, the fact that they would build something as runt as that gives the film a clear clarity not seen today.

Last sign, the soundtrack….wow. Everything about the music is so…so…I don’t know, shining, alive, trusty…I could throw out a lot of adjectives here. Its basically Dixie-Land Jazz played in the background and foreground throughout the entire film. It captures fair about everything in the movie. From the city scapes, to the walk scenes, even to the limited scenes like people in a bar. What’s the intelligent mark is the climax song, Ray Charles’ “I Can’t Terminate Loving You,” I won’t spoil the ending but I will honest say this, “Dr. Strangelove” anyone?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Metropolis! Click Here

In the waste, “Metroplis” is a landmark in anime. EVERYONE should catch the DVD when it comes out, or fair go to the theaters. Own me, it is time worth spent. And if your an anime fan, you have more of a reason to go. You can’t be a good otaku simply by watching “Fushigi Yugi” and “Utena” all day long. Do yourself a favor and contemplate this. There, I said my fragment.

-RW

Between 1947 and 1949, Osamu Tezuka - who was to become the world’s best-known anime producer - issued a petite series of manga about a world of the future where industrialization, robots and humanity are all at odds. Titillating class differences also contribute to the tensions of a world largely in the hands of the power hungry. Now, 50 years later, Rintaro, another eminent name in anime has decided to gain an film from the fresh manga, sparing no worry or expense.

We score Metropolis in the throes of a celebration. Duke Red has completed the Ziggurat, an immensely huge building whose central tower conceals a solar weapon that will gain the city the capital of the world, and Duke Red its ruler. The intricate politics of Metropolis are based on three tiers - the upper class, a spacious and impoverished lower class, and beneath all else, the robots. There is big conflict over the role of the robots. Many panic them, and an anti-robot faction called the Marduks stare the streets, ready to demolish and automaton that acts out of line. Duke Red is the power gradual the Marduks, but secretly he has hired Dr. Laughton, a criminal scientist, to get a well-organized robot in the image of his daughter. This is Tima, whose destiny is to dispute the weapon hidden in the top of the Ziggurat.

Into this arrive Shinsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi. Shinsaku is a detective, advance from Japan to track down Dr. Laughton. As he is doing this, Duke Red’s adopted son Rock, leader of the Marduks, is plotting to waste Laughton’s lab and Tima with it. The resulting conflagration catapults Kenichi and Tima into a wild speed for life with Rock proper unhurried them. On the scheme, we net to study great of Metropolis’s underground, bringing home the social message.

The loyal thrust of the situation, as is often the case with anime bewitching robots and cyborgs is the seek information from of what is human and what is not. Or whether that should even manufacture a disagreement. Tima, who does not know she is not human, finds she is wonderful of wonder, adore, and terror. Is she a soul in the making or a flawed machine? If she had never met Kenichi this would have been a far bitterer film, and the white doves would never collect to waft.

Not only is the artwork much, but this is an comely section of animation, smoothly combining CGI and two-dimensional animation. Sometimes the entire cloak seems to be in motion. An agile sight will capture up recent details on each watching. Toshiyuki Honda’s music is equally satisfying. It is intelligent that Tezuka refused to have this sage made into a film during his life. Apparently, he notion of ‘Metropolis’ as an early and not especially successful distress. However, Rintaro and writer Katsuhiro Otomo (of ‘Akira’ fame) have considerable modified and expanded the anecdote. This is a commonplace when a manga is converted to the mask, since many Japanese anime producers avoid slavish imitation if they have an opportunity to shatter novel ground. I like to believe that Tezuka would have been impressed with Rintaro’s efforts even if ‘Metropolis’ was no longer fair his narrative.

This review is from a die-hard Inuyasha fan and I have to say that this is one of the best deals that VIZ has released yet. If you do not believe any of the four Inuyasha films, then this is the perfect time to earn them, from the most grand source available (being VIZ of course) . Each individual movie goes for about $20-25 and with this being only $30 approach on that is a freakin’ recall! Even if it is not purchased on Amazon, and on VIZs’ gain website (for like $50 or something) it is unruffled worth all of your money! All four films are in this box location with a foldout of the scene selections of each film, quite nicely state up. The quality is top notch, another thing to ask from VIZ and the features that near with each film are really worth this… special footage, trailers, dual languages, different sound capabilities… this has it all! Highly recommended!!!

This is such a tall deal considering that each movie sold on it’s bear is about $15. You fetch all 4 movies for $30, with some fun extras and the options of watching in Japanese or English. There is another movie box station out there that is worthy more expensive and the only inequity is a station of soundtrack CDs. The soundtrack is glowing impressive, but wasn’t significant for my personal consume.

The movies themselves are fun - mighty like longer filler episode arcs with spicy villains and account lines. It’s not meant to aid the Naraku storyline progress, but you’ll be in for some fun (especially if, like me, you’ve already watched the InuYasha TV episodes multiple times and are looking for something recent and fun starring your well-liked dog demon and Japanese school girl.)

The animation is different from the TV reveal - to me the characters peer more “cutesy” but my husband, who is not that involved in the InuYasha series, enjoyed watching some of the major battle scenes and plan that the battle sequences were entertaining better.

Now all we have to do is wait for that final end-all fifth InuYasha movie, and we’ll all be ecstatic. :)

You can’t truely be pleased this DVD without comparing it to the Gleaming Film Works bootleg.

I passe to have the bootleg which was weak badly and dismal and fuzzy and looked like a 20 year broken-down EP tape sourced from a awful 16MM print. It extinct a hybrid of a French and English language track, which when it went between the two sounded like they were switching tapes cause you could hear two different tape hisses. Luckily it was wide-screen, but it was a cropped 1:85:1. It was clear from the side-clipped credits. But at least it was in english and not in 1:33:1 (except for a particular slay scene where it was sourced from another print) . So this DVD while not perfect is lightyears ahead of the bootleg we’ve had to endure, which was teh only blueprint to study this film after it went out of the theaters in the 70’s.

On to the DVD itself:

Pros: Burly 2:35:1 and anamorphic to boot! The reds and colors are worthy stronger than it has ever been outside the theater. Theres an English audio track for us Americans! The print is great brighter revealing previously obscured details, especially with the killer’s cover.

Cons: This appears to be a well-worn theatrical print. Remember Grindhouse? this is the exact deal, theres plenty of scratches. Some scenes appear to be video sourced, while Roberto is trailing his stalker, some parts seemed to be video source due to the quality inequity. As is in a kill scene, probably the same parts that went to 1:33:1 in my bootleg. But I don’t remember him spitting blood on the camera in the bootleg.

Notes: I have no thought if this is uncut or not. I bought this DVD immediately cause I didn’t know where it came from,it came out of left field. I kept hearing there would be no legit release, though i had heard rumors of a German Release from Dragon….some spruce one on DVD Aff. but didn’t enjoy it. So i got it early incase it suddenly had to be pulled since i couldn’t hold they were able to rep teh rights to it. Worth it for now unti BU releases it. But it’s worth getting for at least competion sake.

**** for the movie

*** for the presentation

Considered Argento’s “lost film”, Four Flies on Grey Velvet (Vier Fliegen Auf Grauem Samt) was never officially released…and there is talk that there will never be a legit, official release…but, this version is the closest us fans can win. Until now, I was stuck watching fussy, bland, unpleasant quality bootlegs of the film…searching for the apt one…but never tickled…

But, now there is a slight release of only 1000 copies of the “Deluxe Edition” of the film. I judge one of the best things about it is the box it comes in. It comes in a very nice mock-VHS case, objective like it would have near in when it was on VHS. The quality is…well…gracious for a “lost film”…but some of the footage was obviously ripped from a VHS slit…but i would imagine that is because the unusual film was so damaged…

It is method better than the bootleg cuts and probably as wonderful as it gets when it comes to this film…I honestly wouldn’t have bought the film any other plan, now that i got a taste of the gritty feel of this version…it gives off such a icy vibe…and the film itself is one of Argento’s most unusual and though-provoking…

The sage…the over abundance of abstract and creative angles from commence to achieve…the acting…the whole thing…its all worth owning…ESPECIALLY for the Argento fans.

Finally …… one of those DVD re-releases I’ve been practically holding my breath for, and was not disappointed. This criminally overlooked gem was trashed by critics upon its release in 1970, and never enjoyed a video transfer profitable of the filmmaker’s exertion, not even on laserdisc! And as you can search for from the varying reviews, the controversy rages on. Which unprejudiced proves how alive and well and timely a film Catch-22 truly is.

Mike Nichols captures the essence of Joseph Heller’s defining anti-war classic quite admirably, with a faithful adaptation by Buck Henry (who can be seen along with a veritable Who’s Who period ensemble cast), with an notice as removed and fair as Kubrick, yet at times very visually subjective ….. an come old-fashioned to enormous advantage in his previous hit film The Graduate. All the verbal and ethical contradictions of the book bring its unlit humor to demented life, through a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of archtypical characters who get up the living nightmare of one Captain Yossarian, who has decided he can no longer gain to hover the combat missions his superiors have made it impossible to net out of. To collect out of flying, he has to be officially diagnosed as “crazy”, and must examine to be grounded ….. but if he requests to be grounded, then he’s not really crazy, and is therefore eligible to retain flying missions. That’s some net, that Catch-22.

This film, like the book on which it’s based, is not so considerable an indictment of the insanity of war as it is a behold at how the corporate mentality can pick up its plan into the noblest of causes, and how beurocratic manipulations devaluate basic human principles, which retract a abet seat to merely “looking worthy”. A timeless theme indeed. This skewed logic is cheerfully well-liked by all the story’s characters ….. until our Yossarian’s eyes are opened to the product of that logic literally disemboweled at his fingertips (yes, that scene was effect relieve in!), and suddenly he is the outsider whose prime mission is to avoid any more missions. Which is not an easy thing to do when Brass keeps adding more after you’ve completed your tour of duty.

As far as the transfer itself: It has probably never looked better since the unique theatrical release over 30 years ago, especially being the first widescreen release of this title, which is the only map to experience it as intended. The transfer team did the best they could with the mono soundtrack, I’m positive, which does glean compressed and distorted at times, something we enthusiasts of early films live with.

Mike Nichols’ Catch-22 may only appreciate cult station, but it is DVD releases like this (and that other oddball, star-studded 60’s curiosity Candy) that gain one truly be pleased what is being done with this revolutionary medium. Hey, not all movies can be for everybody. Long live the Anti-Blockbusters!

Catch-22 is based on Joseph Heller’s unusual about an American air substandard in the Mediterranean during World War II. Again, if you are a reader IMHO the book Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 (Barron’s Book Notes) is better, the movie quicker, Starring Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

Recommended for fans of Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

“The Rocker” is a surprisingly delicious movie, with spirited performances, jokes that are proper for the material, and a fairly solid premise. I was consistently involved in what was going on, and I actually cared about the characters. In a sense, it’s like a sports movie, in which we root for the heroes to fight the agreeable fight and emerge victorious. I’m hard pressed to say it was any better than it wanted to be, however. Had this myth been told dramatically, it probably would have been powerful more powerful; the rise to fame is not without its turmoil, especially when the celebrities are teenagers. The notion of an adult drummer leading a teenage rock band from the garage to the arena is fat of emotionally charged possibilities. Many of them weren’t explored because “The Rocker” was made as a comedy. But that’s okay. It aloof works.

The legend begins in 1986, unbiased as a well-liked heavy metal band called Vesuvias finishes a gig in Cleveland. Despite their success, the drummer, Robert “Fish” Fishman (Rainn Wilson), is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. He swears that he’ll gain it no matter what, but when we flash forward twenty years, it’s certain that things haven’t worked out as planned; Fish spends his days doing the tasks of a soul-crushing desk job. When he’s fired for unruly behavior (namely attacking a coworker for playing the current Vesuvias album), he’s forced to leave his apartment and recede in with his disapproving sister, Lisa (Jane Lynch), her thrill-seeking husband, Stan (Jeff Garlin), and their quarrelsome children, Violet (Samantha Weinstein) and Matt (Josh Gad) . Matt and his high school friends Amelia (Emma Stone) and Curtis (Teddy Geiger) have formed a rock band called A.D.D.; after weeks of trying, they will finally have their first gig at the prom.

But there’s a problem: the drummer was suspended from school and grounded by his mother. With itsy-bitsy resources available, and with only one day to go until the gig, Matt asks Fish if he would be willing to once again grasp up his drumsticks. Fish accepts, and when prom night arrives, everything goes smoothly. At least, it does at first; things go spoiled when Fish ruins A.D.D.’s rendition of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” When the smoke clears, everyone decides to give Fish another chance, but only if he can gain them another gig. Then comes the night all four members practice with each other via webcams–Fish, not realizing the plan on his laptop is a camera and not a microphone, sits completely naked at his drum residence. “Hello, YouTube,” says Violet maliciously, watches everything on her computer.

Before anyone knows it, the video known as “The Naked Drummer” is an Internet sensation. It isn’t long before a scummy L.A. agent named David Marshall (Jason Sudeikis) enters with promises of fame and fortune. Thus begins A.D.D.’s Midwest tour, in which they initiate for other various bands. Hopefully, this will pave the design to more serious venues, maybe even their first solo gig. Of course, nothing like this can happen without some concern along the way; Fish, hoping to loosen up the other members, encourages reckless behavior, like destroying hotel rooms and attending wild parties (by some miracle, the remark of alcohol never comes up) . While all the parents search for that Fish is a terrible influence, Curtis’ mother, Kim (Christina Applegate), believes that the kids should follow their hearts. She volunteers to discontinue with the band for the rest of the tour to withhold an discover on things.

At a determined point in the film, Fish is faced with a very tough decision. I won’t thunder what it is, but I will say it creates the first genuine rift between him and the rest of the band. The ask is raised: Was Fish always meant for a life of rock and roll, or is he unprejudiced a sloppy, irresponsible dreamer that refuses to grow up? One could ask the same thing about most music superstars, which is why it’s almost impossible to salvage an respond. Some are famed because they got lucky while other have true talent. It seems that everyone in A.D.D. is talented enough: Fish certainly knows his map around a drum set; Amelia’s edifying with a guitar, and Matt can really work a synthesizer; Curtis is a natural songwriter, although one wonders if he’ll ever glean past his abandonment issues. His father left him when he was only four, and he’s been brooding about it ever since.

If this movie is, in fact, giving us a message, then it’s probably the most sure one we can contemplate of: we have to do what we esteem and not let anyone stand in the scheme. We’re also told about sticking together no matter what, since a band is essentially like a family. In this case, it’s a family that doesn’t want to “grow up”; they want to eat, breathe, and sleep music without becoming corporate-run zombies that sit late desks staring at computer screens. Fish suffered that fate for twenty years, making a living but not being alive. All he wanted was to have a pleasant time, and he finds that passion once again helping his nephew’s band. The movie itself shares that same passion for fun, which is a nice change from some of the raunchier immature comedies released over the past couple of months (”Step Brothers” and “Drillbit Taylor” approach to mind) . “The Rocker” is droll without being excessive, and it actually tells us a yarn we can absorb in. While it wasn’t made as a drama, there are moments that are a bit more thoughtful in their near. The fact that the filmmakers knew when to let the humor simmer down tells me they took their work seriously.

“Dwight” from The Office fans should score enough Dwight in this film to satisfy. Those of you who can’t stand “Dwight” well, you may not pick up The Rocker experience a gigantic one. The yarn is funny enough. Twenty years previously, Fish (Wilson) is the drummer for the band Vesuvius. Wonderful news for the band, a enormous trace wants to price them. Dreadful news for Fish, the president of the designate has a drummer nephew who will be the band drummer. Fish never gets over this tiny. As the band Vesuvius grows in popularity, Fish grows in bitterness. After losing his job, girlfriend and apartment he moves into his sister’s attic. His nephew has a garage band with a gig at the prom. They lose their drummer and, well, you can figure it out from here.

Surprisingly shipshape, there are no sex scenes, the language is tolerable and low-key. However, there is a scene with an aroused mother who shares the fact that her son drew a male body fraction on a female teacher’s face….which is a very droll scene, but contains the anatomically good word several times. There is also a band manager who is very free with come-on’s and has a sexually oriented potty mouth. A scene of Fish drumming naked becomes the YouTube hit — The Naked Drummer — and propels the band to popularity. Viewers are treated to a whole lot of naked man rear shots.

The humor level is moderate. Like I said, you probably need to be amused by Dwight to fully be pleased Fish’s humor. He has a very original delivery, sweet blended with doofusy sarcasm/nastiness. There are several funny one-liners and situations that are laugh out loud including quite a bit of physical humor. Christina Applegate delivers some tremendous sarcastic lines. The writing is agreeable. The songs are easy to listen to and I really liked their sound. Solid friendship, do-the-right thing and forgiveness themes accelerate through the film. Fish is a classic 80’s rocker who likes the party scene, including the trashing of hotel rooms. The three younger band members are annoyed with his boorish behavior and that’s a nice refreshing change from the usual teen movie.
